Add 'Tip of the day' to the Homepage
Open, Needs TriagePublicFeature

Description

Feature summary (what you would like to be able to do and where):
Several projects have this template: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14396081

In which there is some advice for every day, a hint on how to work on Wikipedia. It seems to me that it would be useful to be able to insert such a template on the Homepage. Since newcomers and regular editors may be interested in the information in this template. Perhaps it needs to be reworked, the text shortened, the code changed, or something like that.

Use case(s) (list the steps that you performed to discover that problem, and describe the actual underlying problem which you want to solve. Do not describe only a solution):

Benefits (why should this be implemented?):

  1. Useful tips for new editors to help them edit Wikipedia
  2. Perhaps an increase in visits to the homepage, as it will be interesting what new advice is today.

neat idea, thanks for filing this @Iniquity!

cc @KStoller-WMF @RHo @Trizek-WMF for you to discuss.

Interesting! Thanks @Iniquity, for the great Growth team ideas!
I certainly like the idea of adding in more content to make the homepage more educational for newcomers and more engaging with changing content.
However, I would be hesitant to pursue a feature like this that currently could only be used on 4 wikis. But it's definitely something we can consider in the future, especially if more wikis adopt this "tip of the day" template.
@Trizek-WMF let us know if you know of any more details about the "tip of the day" feature that might be relevant. Is it possible that more wikis have a variation of this that isn't connected to that Wikidata item?

I looked for more possible projects, found 20 more :)

Nice idea, related to T229868: Homepage: interactive tutorial module IMO. :)

I'm not sure if these tips are useful. I remember reading a paper that proved that they were just an annoying distraction between most users and their goals. I hope to find it back.

Tips are only available as an opt-in option on wikis I checked. Users have to copy a piece of wikitext to get the tips at their talk page or elsewhere. It means that we don't know if they are useful, impactful and used.

Tips aren't structured on wikis. If we go for it, we should add a way to structure them, even by wikitext.

Oh, yeah, I forgot about this task :)

Such things are very rarely very useful. Usually they just allow you to combine interactivity and usefulness.

Yes, Tips will need to be brought all under one format. It is possible to limit the number of characters and think over the design

Moving to triaged, cc @KStoller-WMF @RHo if you want to move this under some epic for future consideration.
