Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):

  • At es.wp, claim manually User:Lauferagui as a mentee.
  • Next, go to your list of mentees and search for Lauferagui there.

What happens?:

  • The mentee username is not displayed at the mentor dashboard after being claimed by a mentor.
  • The mentor module is not shown at the newcomer homepage.

What should have happened instead?:

  • Once the mentor claimed the mentee, their username should appear at the mentor dashboard list.
  • Also, the newcomer should be able to see the mentor module at her homepage once she is claimed as mentee.

Event Timeline

Spanish Wikipedia doesn't provide a mentor to all newcomers (T285235). The fact that only 25% of new accounts get a mentor is certainly related to this problem.

We can either:

  • fix the issue temporarily to that claimed newcomers automatically get a mentor
  • wait until 100% of new accounts get a mentor

Change 882660 had a related patch set uploaded (by Urbanecm; author: Urbanecm):

[mediawiki/extensions/GrowthExperiments@master] ChangeMentor: If mentee has mentorship module disabled, enable it

In the 2023-01-18 mentorship meeting, we decided to go with the first solution, considering scaling both es.wikipedia and en.wikipedia to 100% of mentorship will likely take significant time. The patch above enables mentorship as part of claiming. If the mentee opted-out of mentorship intentionally (via the T287915 interface), their mentorship module will not be restored, to respect the mentee's decision.

@Urbanecm_WMF - there could be more cases when a mentee is unavailable for mentoring. Do you think it'd be worth to create a better message to those mentors who attempt to claim a mentee that is not available?

Right now a mentor who attempts to Claim mentee will not get any info whether a user opted out from Mentorship or a user's Mentorship module is not enabled.

Agreed.

Indeed. I filled this as T330493 (with a note to look at T267167 at some point too).
