Copy: Improve the English labels of some ZObject's keys to be more understandable, and so encourage better translations
Open, MediumPublic

Description

Change the pre-set English labels of some keys so that they fit the copy of the designs of some custom-built components, and the titles can get translated using Wikifunctions as well. This is only for labels that correspond directly to a particular key.

We should leave this to immediately before launch, so that we can figure out exactly what English strings fit best with our requirements.

For the moment, these are the suggestions we've pinned down:

  • General views:
    • Z2K2: "Contents"
  • About widget:
    • Z2K3: "Name"
    • Z2K4: "Aliases"
    • Z2K5: "Description"
  • Implementation view:
    • Z16K1: "Programming language"
  • Other keys to contemplate:
    • Z8K1: "Arguments" vs. "Inputs"
    • Z8K2: "Return type" vs. "Output"

I updated the description, the status, and the assignee because nobody is actively working on this task. I'm going to file a parent task for the copy that includes both translatewiki messages (qqq) and zobject labels.

I was pointed here from https://www.wikifunctions.org/wiki/Talk:Z2 by @Jdforrester-WMF .

Currently, Z2 has the English key values "labels" and "short descriptions". They are shown when editing an object label:

As far as I can understand, an object can have only one label and one description in each language. Despite this, these English labels remain plural, and they were also translated into several languages in the plural form.

Can they be changed into "label" and "short description", or better, just "description"?

I agree that is how they should appear, in the About pop-up configured as it is. But we don’t want to make the text in the underlying object singular.

One possibility is that we add some language “chips” under the plural label, indicating languages that have a value already which could be a useful prompt. Then it would appear to make sense (to me) to be adding a single value to the set, but the value would have no label of its own, (except, perhaps, the language name in its own language, if the chip is not clear enough). This happens to correspond to the underlying object (there’s a surprise!) and (in my view) sidesteps the issue of a singular entry in a field with a plural label, while enriching the user experience.
