Search Console access request for @Soda for Wikisource
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

  • Do you already have a valid NDA on file with WMF legal?: No (But am willing to sign one)
  • Your reason for accessing the Google Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools:
    • In the immediate future helping with T325607
    • Over the long term, making improvements in ProofreadPage that will allow for better indexing of associated pages
  • End date: May 9, 2024 (or a year from the date access is given)

Event Timeline

I'm happy (as a WMF staff member) to vouch for @Soda for this access.

@Samwilson: assuming this is following https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Volunteer_NDA, please get your manager to comment and approve

This will also need C-Level sign off.

cc @KFrancis but not ready for NDA until that is done

adding @SCherukuwada since they just became owner of wikisource.org (all subdomains under it) in search console last week in T336500

Every subdomain is a separate site. Is this request really for ALL of wikisource or for a few languages? That changes the nature of the request significantally. One can be delegated but the other means having to be owner, afaict.

I think from a development of ProofreadPage POV, en, bn, hi should suffice ? (one from each size listed at https://wikisource.org/wiki/Main_Page, also happens to be the three languages I am familiar with) since I'm expecting different sizes of wikis can/will be treated differently by Google Search.

T325607 appears to be getting more traction right now, but being able to actively monitor this in the long-term and make changes to ProofreadPage and/or the Wikisource extension to help with SEO will definitely be helpful :)

Please assign this to me once C-level approval and NDA have been taken care of.

Hi All, I know we're waiting on some approvals, but in the meantime, I will need the volunteer's full name, mailing address, and email. Please send the following information to: kfrancis@wikimedia.org. Thank you!

Aklapper added a subscriber: Albertoleoncio.

@Albertoleoncio: Not sure why you added SRE here. Removing.

Can you also please give me a little more information about what type of access the volunteer will need? I usually process for things like access to the LDAP Group. Is this similar?

T238090 was basically for the same purpose. It can be used as a example.

IDK, I was just following T238090.

If the volunteer is given access to Search Console data, they will be able
to examine the following information:

  • which queries lead to search results on Google that have Wikis in them
  • which results get clicked on by users
  • the total query volume that has search results from the Wikis
  • Whether a given page from a Wiki property has been indexed or has

problems preventing it from being indexed

  • a breakdown of the above information by device platform, country, and

date.

We're talking about read-only access, so making any changes is not in
scope. The access would be granted to specific subdomains of the specific
Wikis the volunteer is interested in. For instance, in this case they'd
only have access to WikiSource and not to say, Wikipedia.

Hello all, the NDA has been signed. Please proceed with the access request. Thanks!

@Soda I need a gmail account to provide access to.

I looked up the email address for user @Soda in LDAP and it was indeed a gmail address.

I then sent a private mail to @SCherukuwada with that address. Wasn't sure if you would mind that I paste it on the ticket.

This should have unblocked this.

This has been granted for a period of one year.

Can confirm that I have access :)

Aklapper renamed this task from Search Console access request for Wikisource (Volunteer) to Search Console access request for @Soda for Wikisource.Jul 7 2023, 12:59 PM

Per request I created an entry in the "maint-announce" calendar to revoke this access in one year, July 8, 2024 and linked back to this ticket.

(this is the current process per https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Search_Console_Data)
