This is an interesting observation. East asian scripts typically have much smaller line-lengths than western scripts, so they can afford more indentation without breaking the text on multiple lines.

I'm curious if one of the goals of this very specific request is to makes the characters line up vertically? If we increase the indentation to equal the font-size, we would have an almost grid-like alignment of characters, is this a desirable outcome? (just asking out of curiosity, I don't know anything about east asian typography).

However, regardless of the rationale, I think we can mark this task as #fixed-in-zebra, because we are increasing the indentation in that design revision from 8px to 12px there (almost font-size, which is 14px).

I am also not familiar with these scripts. However some of these scripts can be read vertically too and if we align it exactly with the character above I wonder if it would create some confusion in reading. Perhaps those who can read the script may not find it confusing but I think having a little offset might be better to avoid any potential confusion. We are already increasing the indentation as @Jdrewniak mentioned so hopefully that alone will help. Could we try that first and see if that satisfies the request before aligning it to the character?

If there are enough vertical spaces between each line of scripts (name of the chapters), I don't think Chinese readers would be confused. Since currently, the vertical spaces between words are already larger than the horizontal ones, we shall not be worry about it.

Note that there are usually no spaces between characters in Chinese and Japanese scripts.

My understanding of this issue is that the indentation should be the same width as one character. @Jdrewniak 's proposed solution above should fix it.
