Let user select if they want to reply as a bullet/numbered list/normal
Open, Needs TriagePublicFeature

Description

Feature summary (what you would like to be able to do and where):
In the advanced menu, propose adding a way to select if the user wants to reply...

  • Normally (:)
  • As a bullet in a bulleted list (*)
  • As a number in a numbered list (#)

If the comment above it at the same level is one of these things, it should default to that type.

Use case(s) (list the steps that you performed to discover that problem, and describe the actual underlying problem which you want to solve. Do not describe only a solution):

Often in big enwiki discussions and in XFDs, the first level of comments is a bulleted list. I find myself hitting reply, submitting my reply, then going back and doing a second edit to change the colon to an asterisk, in order to make my regular comment into a bulleted list.

Benefits (why should this be implemented?):

I think this is a duplicate of T276510 -- though it is better-specified than that older ticket. 🤔

I kind of like T250127 as a sneaky way to accomplish this, at least in source mode, without needing extra UI hidden away in the "advanced" section.

The general problem is T259865. I don't think making users open "Advanced" and work out which list style to choose is the best solution. This should not be an advanced feature. It would be better to just provide a button when a vote-style discussion is detected, as explored in T269163.
