Mapframe caption in kartographer turns to plain text when opened full-size
Open, Needs TriagePublicDesign

Description

see https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vorlage:Karte_von_Denkm%C3%A4lern_(%C3%96sterreich)/Doku#Hinweise

there is a caption containing wiki-syntax. In the embedded version the wiki-syntax does as expected. When enlarging / opening the map to full-size, the caption turns to plain text.

Event Timeline

So far I was under the impression this was an intentional design decision when the feature was added in 2016 via T131907. The caption from the thumbnail in the article is repeated to provide some context, but not with the intention to make it 100% identical. The font size is much larger, it's only one line, and the length is limited, cutting the text off when it's to long. It's not meant to be a copy from the article, but really only a plain text caption.

Can you explain the proposal in a bit more detail? I mean, what if the caption is not only 2 lines like in this example, but much, much larger? How would this work?

Related: The WMDE-TechWish team improved the situation already a bit for narrow screens, see T333160 and T335032.

It was. We didn’t want people including images, graphs, entire articles and i don’t know what else as captions in the viewer. Also, maps were stored in pageprops back then, so there were significant space concerns.

It is not a proposal, but a complaint about some inconsistency :-)
See e.g. the map used in https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_der_denkmalgesch%C3%BCtzten_Objekte_in_Villach:

  • the caption gives the source and the reference to WD (to be a good citizen) in the embedded mapframe and
  • a legend for the colors of the pins used.

When opening / enlarging the map, the legend is gone / the colors are gone - so the context is gone. (Whereas in the embedded mapframe, I see the legend but cannot hover on the pins).

It is ok for me, if there are some restriction in length.

Change 998947 had a related patch set uploaded (by Thiemo Kreuz (WMDE); author: Thiemo Kreuz (WMDE)):

[mediawiki/extensions/Kartographer@master] Strip "noexcerpt" elements from the fullscreen map caption

I must agree here. Editors could put almost anything into these captions and it would not be reasonable to show all of that to the user when the map is expanded.

So although I see a use case here I would not see a simple solution. The workaround for the examples given would be writing out the colors instead of drawing them I guess.

I will also remove the WMDE related tags here since we're currently not working on this feature, especially when it's about adding new functionality.

In former days when there was a bug report it had to be fixed on behalf of the software provider. When there was a change request, the customer had to pay extra money. So it was always the goal of the software provider to declare almost anything to be a change request, and the goal of the client to declare anything to be a bug report. Works as designed was the tautology behind.

Wikiverse works differently. You as a software provider have to keep the community happy and working. Unsubscribing @WMDE-Fisch is like stealing away from the responsibility WMDE has taken once (I assume for kartographer, otherwise I do not understand your comment at all). I didn't add the WMDE related tags.
So what is the currency that will make you start even to think about working on this change request? What can the community do for WMDE to make you happy?

I do not share, btw, your opinion, that this is a change request or new functionality of whatever. Enlarging something will not let me expect that information is dropped silently. A map without the possibility for a legend is not state of the art. I consider this still to be a bug. (compare this bug report and the associated effort to fix it with the malfunction of the cylindric projection of kartographer near the pole regions - maybe I could offer not writing a bug report on the later topic in exchange)

Definitely NOT this comment

I suppose to some degree at least Kartographer could draw from MultimediaViewer on how to handle long/stylized captions.

But as long as styles, links and similar parts (except for the part truncated with an ellipsis) are stripped, possibly it should be also restricted what can be entered as a mapframe caption in the first place. I mean an error message could be displayed if there is a discrepancy between thumbnail caption and full screen caption, or at least there could be tracking/maintenance category for these situations (similar to "Pages with ignored display titles").
