The "<em>" tag was inserted via italicised text in the clipboard. Source for the text was a web page. I would expect that the VE drops the tag or replaces it with two singe quotes.

Ich have no idea where the "<nowiki>" tag came from. I wasn't able to delete it in the VE.

Looking at this again, I believe VE used to add those nowiki tags to prevent the line being displayed differently from the others because of the space at its beginning; and VE does retain formatting when pasting, but that can be avoided by using the shortcut Ctrl + Shift + V.

Yeah, good point. I thought we already did this?

That's because you ended up with a paragraph starting with a ' ', and to stop it turning into a <pre> block it instead – bug 66628. It's harmless, if irritating.
