Sometimes rights get changed from other wikis (like from meta), there is at the moment a task for that, that these notifications work, but when this is ready I think it is important that the link to the userpage of the user, who changed your rights, points to the right wikis. Is this planned?

I've updated the Notifications spreadsheet with all the new language and links. That document is more comprehensive than Pau's very helpful graphic (pasted above) and should be considered the "official" reference for links and language (if you see errors, please flag them). Here is the URL: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XjPO8RlrFMqNhboWBUZwONJv93TRmLbReAuQ_ZktnD0/edit#gid=0

Meanwhile, because Pau's graphic is so helpful, I'm sure people will continue to consult it. With that thought, Pau, there are a few places where I've suggested small changes that cause discrepancies with your graphic (these are highlighted in the spreadsheet in Comments). I'm copying those below, so you can update the graphic -- or let me know you disagree with the changes.

[Edit User Talk]

  • Ludmilla left a message on your talk page in "How the Moai Moved".

[added topic, since the secondary link#2 is to the diff, so otherwise you wouldn't know.]

[User-Rights]

  • Your user rights were changed. You are now a member of this group: Oversighters.
  • Your user rights were changed. You are no longer a member of these groups: Oversighters, Administrators.
  • Your user rights were changed. You are now a member of this group: Oversighters. You are no longer a member of these groups: X, Y, Z.

[Thinking, from Comments: Pau had suggested a wording formulation that I liked better in principle ("You are now in the Oversighter group.") But when we look at the run of variations that need to happen here, it may be simpler technically to stick more closely to the existing formula, which uses a colon -- especially when multiple groups are involved. Using the colon gets us out of the business of having to say "you are now in the X, Y, and Z groups" or, for negatives, "You are no longer in the X, Y, or Z groups." As I say, the wording there is fine, but I think Roan told me we don't currently have a function for "and/or" in the case of a negative. If it's just as easy technically, I'm OK either way…]

@jmatazzoni thanks for the feedback, which makes a lot of sense. I'll update the mockup based on that.

The only point I'm not sure about is regarding "View links to this page". The intent for secondary actions is to present them as links to relevant content, which is normally better represented by the content itself. For example, when we link to Ludmilla user page we present it as "Ludmilla", not "View Ludmilla".

In my examples, I kept "view changes" as an exception to that since "changes" may not be that obvious. I'm ok to consider "View links to this page" as another exception if we think it is needed. Just wanted to clarify the rationale to capture it properly in the guidelines.

@Luke081515 Thanks for your input. If I understand this correctly, it is important that the user who changed your rights points to the wiki from which those rights were changed since that is the most likely place to find the user in case you want to interact with they. That is, if I post in the user talk page of my local wiki, it may be ignored since the user may not be a frequent user of such wiki. Is that the kind of scenario you had in mind?

@Pginer-WMF Thanks for explaining about the secondary link language. Let's stick with "All links to this page" for page-linked. " I'll update my notes above and the spreadsheet. Thanks for updating the graphic.

Hi Pau, Thanks for updating the graphic. It looks like you changed edit-user-talk but left user-rights unchanged. (See my comments on it above.) Was that on purpose or an oversight?

@Pginer-WMF The request to add a new notification-type for global-rights changes, is T53541: Support global account rights change notification in Echo

Some remaning question about three situations, I hope this is helpful for your concept ;)

Inline Comments

What will happen, if the user who changed your rights change more than one of your rights, and what if he remove rights, or both at one action?

I guess in this example "Missing reference" is the subject, what will happen if the user chooses the default subject, like in enwiki "Wikipedia email"? Will this be ignored, or something like this?

In this case I guess it is helpful to ignore the default summary like "Reverted edits by <user>". sometimes there is a custom summary after this, like: "Reverted edits by <user>, off-topic". In this case I think it is very useful if Echo shows only the custom summary, so Echo says:
"Your edit on <article> was reverted
'off-topic'"

@jmatazzoni, just got distracted with the new flow-usertalkpage notification types (and creating icons for them) and didn't got to update the text. I can do that quickly.

Related to this, as I commented on the spreadsheet, we can tweak the language to remove the explicit mention to groups (if we think that is already implicit): "Your user rights were changed. You are no longer a member of: Oversighters, Administrators"

What will happen, if the user who changed your rights change more than one of your rights, and what if he remove rights, or both at one action?

@Luke081515 there seem to be some technical difficulties in supporting the proposed language related to combining variable pieces of information in a way that can be properly translated. So the final language will be similar to the current one for now (maybe with some minor polishing as I was suggesting above). For messages with multiple variants I'm not illustrating all of them, but the text used for these cases is: "Your user rights were changed. You are now a member of this group: Oversighters. You are no longer a member of these groups: X, Y, Z."

Both comments go along the lines of showing the content that is most meaningful, and I totally agree with them.
At this point we have not evaluated if it is feasible to surface the content in all these different cases, but I've added notes to indicate that we should also check whether is possible to skip placeholder/default content in a proper way (i.e., playing well with localisation).

Sounds good. Updated spreadsheet. Be sure to change your graphic.

@Pginer-WMF Hey Pau, please see the discussion at T121812. Are you OK with the new language for linking: "A link was made from Easter Island to Moai."

If so, please update the graphic on this page.

I've come to prefer this, so am updating the spreadsheet. If you have objections, let me know.

@jmatazzoni The new text looks good. I have updated the image.

@Pginer-WMF Thanks for updating the graphic. I should have been more specific re. the plural. (I fid update it in the spreadsheet...) Anyway, the bundled format should, I think, be as follows; Links were made from Easter Island and 99 other pages to Moai.

My bad. I updated it again.
