Some sort of 'cancel' affordance should be added back to the VE toolbar. This doesn't need to be anything large or fancy, just an X or something so folks have something visual to latch onto.
This is needed because:
- The escape key is a useful way out, but not necessarily something new users will realise right away. They need a clear way out in order to not feel discouraged.
- Not all devices have an escape key in the first place - tablet on-screen keyboards tend to lack it, and due to the limited/buggy nature of the MF VE interface, there is considerable incentive for them to be using the desktop version.
- Exiting VE via the skin 'view' interface depends on the skin, and is unintuitive. Some skins lack a clear 'view' button (monobook only has a 'page' tab, others may have less), or it may appear considerably above the controls themselves and is thus not where people are likely to look, as controls for the specific tool are expected to be with the tool itself. Even if a user knows that that's the way out, it can be highly inconvenient to go all the way to the top of the page when in the middle of something fairly large (due to editing a section or something).
To concerns that it may not fit, I should point out that I still want this even thought all the buttons already do not necessarily fit on my screen. Personally I blame Vector and would like to stab it to death, though the way the ooui toolbar is done could bear a bit of stabbing as well.
