Publicize Interactive Maps in a blog post
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

We should publish a blog post about maps deployment to Wikipedia. I started a draft at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Yurik/Maplink_blogpost - feel free to edit before we finalize it.

I'd like some more eyes on this for review. I've organized the information a little and added videos showing how the features work. @EdErhart-WMF what do you think about this? Blog worthy?

@Yurik can you review for accuracy please?

Thanks for adding me to this, @CKoerner_WMF! @Yurik, do you want to jump on a call tomorrow or Thursday to discuss this? This is a fascinating tool that I'd like to attract lots of attention to.

@EdErhart-WMF, I'm flying to Brussels today for a conference, but I should be able to find a stable internet connection tomorrow. Just in case I'm not around, @JGirault and @MaxSem should also be able to help with this.

@Yurik there's no hurry—I'm happy to wait until you're free!

Yuri and I met with Ed and Sam to discuss this draft. We're going to structure something similar to the mobile web improvements blog post: https://blog.wikimedia.org/2016/09/19/mobile-web-improvements/

Notes from the meeting:

  • Make sure we include a mention that the data is from OpenStreetMaps and the collaboration there.
  • Start the article from a reader's standpoint. What will they get? You can see maps on articles!
  • See if we can give a rough timeline to share for them being on wikipedia
    • You might start seeing links like (examples of use on wikipedias)
    • hu and ca use in article on wikipedia
  • Then talk about some of the tech details
    • maplink
    • mapframe
    • geoshapes

We'll do a separate post on Graphs at a later date.

Thanks, @CKoerner_WMF. I'm always around on Hangouts if you need to bounce ideas off someone or have any questions.

CKoerner_WMF renamed this task from Publicize <maplink> in a blog post to Publicize Interactive Maps in a blog post.Oct 14 2016, 6:00 PM
CKoerner_WMF updated the task description. (Show Details)

After talking to the team it was decided to draft an article announcing the full map features to Wikipedia. This will follow the same structure we discussed with Comms, but include everything the team has been working toward.

  • Mapframe
  • Maplink
  • Geoshapes
  • Maps + Graphs
  • Static map service
  • And maybe even a mention of maps usage in WDQS

As of this comment this is probably a few weeks out as the team works on the technical implementations. I'l update the draft to reflect our desired state so we have it ready to go!

Sounds good to me, @CKoerner_WMF, but please do remember that we can have multiple blog posts on the team's work. Scope creep can lessen interest in individual posts. :-)

CKoerner_WMF lowered the priority of this task from Medium to Low.Dec 13 2016, 3:30 PM

It's unlikely we're going to be able to get around to this any time soon, so I'm closing as declined. We can reopen later if we find we have the time.
