Update the app widgets to the rest of the app design and feature set
Closed, DuplicatePublic

Description

Reported in OTRS on: https://ticket.wikimedia.org/otrs/index.pl?Action=AgentTicketZoom;TicketID=10683504

Problem

The widgets are outdated and do not reflect the current visual design of the app, nor do they represent the current feature focus (showing a simple monolingual search and linking to the Main page featured article rather then the Explore feed featured article).

The widget updates infrequently. It's said wells and wellington affair for days now. More annoyingly, why can't you open wikipedia without opening the featured article? It should be if I poke the name, goes to today's article; if I poke the W it goes to wikipedia home page.

The widget for your app on android is just a simple app-icon. Or i get forced by you to read the "article of the day" which seems like a bad joke, guys. I don't get the sense of this, but i'm sure that's not the intention of a widget!

At least a search-bar for the startscreen would be great if not even basic. But this is pure nonsense. Please fix that! Otherwise don't offer "widgets"

This is even more relevant after the announcement at this year’s Google IO:
Android 12 revamps the existing Widgets API to improve the user and developer experience in the platform and launchers.
