Description

When MediaSearch becomes default, as a Commons user, I want to be able to find Special:Search if I need it, and I want to be aware that there is a preference to switch my default back, so that I can switch if I want to.

Design:

banner.jpg (845×1 px, 335 KB)
link.jpg (721×1 px, 308 KB)

Acceptance Criteria:

  • There is a link to Special:Search from the upper right corner of the MediaSearch page that reads "Switch to Special:Search"
  • There is an alert/banner for logged in users about the new preference on the MediaSearch page for logged in users that reads "Looking for Special:Search? You can now adjust your preferences to select your preferred search experience"
  • Once a logged-in user dismisses the notice, it does not appear for them again

Event Timeline

Two ideas for this ticket so far:

  • Small link in the top right that can live there for the foreseeable future. Have been struggling with the copy here. "Switch to old search, "Switch to classic search", "Switch to text based search" were all ideas.

02.jpg (721×1 px, 307 KB)

  • An alert that can be dismissed for logged in users that links to Special:Search and the preferences page. Again, the copy is giving me trouble to get right.

01.jpg (845×1 px, 335 KB)

"Switch to the text-based Special:Search"?

"Old search" won't help most as they won't know what that is, since users don't use it, same problem with the "Classic" nomenclature. So I like the "text-based" but add in the name of the page, so it's clear it's just a different page and not going to magically transform this search page.

Good points @Keegan, thanks for the input!

  • We want to make sure it's clear to experienced contributors what we are referring and linking to, which makes me think that just calling it "Special:Search" is a good idea. (As Keegan suggests)
  • We also don't want to confused people who have landed on search and aren't familiar with Commons or the concept of "Special:". I think this can mostly be solved by not showing the banner to logged out visitors. It could be worth not showing the "switch" link to logged out users either but don't know how often our more advanced users are logged out.

@Jseddon brought to my attention that now that we have the "Help" link in the top right, that this design doesn't quite work. A few points I mentioned from our Slack thread

  • Let's try not to show the permanent text link when the alert / banner is showing as it's redundant.
  • One option could be to place the "Switch to Special:Search" next to the "Help" link and remove the black ? icon
    Screen Shot 2021-03-24 at 3.28.30 PM.png (786×1 px, 612 KB)
  • Regarding mobile web, my initial reaction is to hide both of these messages. The alert / banner in particular will take up a large portion of the screen. Having a large banner to promote the action of leaving Media Search right when you land on it feels like a pretty weird experience. I also don't think that the use case we are aiming for with these messages is as prevalent on mobile web. Any thoughts on this point @CBogen?

I like Matthew's suggestion of removing the black ? icon and placing the Switch to Special:Search text next to the Help link. I'm also fine with not showing the banner on mobile, since as Matthew said, power users looking for Special:Search are mostly on desktop. We can come back to this if we hear otherwise. (Looks like the help link doesn't show on mobile either, which I also think is fine).

I'm moving the task back to Design review for @mwilliams review if the following need additional follow-ups. Aside from that the task may be closed as Resolved.
(1) from this comment

Let's try not to show the permanent text link when the alert / banner is showing as it's redundant.

The links are displayed when the banner is present. When the banner is dismissed - the links stay (it's a correct behavior).

(2) on mobile the functionality - to have MediaSearch as default - is not present. Should it be addressed in other tasks?

Thanks Elena!

I don't think this is a blocker, just found it a bit weird to have two links to the same place. Let's ignore this for now!

I was expecting MediaSearch to be the default on mobile web as well? Not sure if that should be related to this ticket though? cc: @CBogen

Yep, it should be the default on mobile. Cormac created T279057 and is working on it now, so this ticket can be closed.
