[design] Styling of "Create account" button
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Description

We have three options for the styling of the Create account button:

quietquiet progressivenormal
quiet.png (327×1 px, 86 KB)
quiet progressive.png (328×1 px, 87 KB)
normal.png (328×1 px, 86 KB)

We (Alex H, Volker, and Rita) are considering this choice from two perspectives so far:
1) visual design/balance with other elements in the header

  • until we are a bit further along in the project and have restyled other nearby elements it is difficult to know what the best long-term choice is here. Given the current state of the interface a normal button would be quite prominent, arguably too prominent (since it kind of becomes the largest single element on the page, aside maybe from the page title). We will continue to keep an eye on this as the visual design progresses in general.

2) the affect on # of account creations

  • my current understanding is that increasing account creations is not currently a goal but might become a goal in the near future. I am not currently clear on what amount of decrease (if any) would be acceptable. It seems safe to assume that a normal button would lead to more account creations than a quiet button. At the same time a quiet button is arguably more noticeable than the current Create account link in Legacy Vector, so it might be a step in the right direction regardless of how it compares with the other options. We will be tracking account creation and can compare it to old Vector. We could also run an A/B test if we think it would be worthwhile.

Proposal

Our current proposal is to implement this as a quiet button for the time being. cc @RHo @MMiller_WMF
