Description

The name for Pashto language in Swedish is displayed as "afghanska" (instead of "pashto") in at least one Wikidata language list, the one used to indicate the language of a monolingual text string.

@jhsoby Could you have a look at this, make sure that the description of the problem is accurate? Thanks!

Issue comes from https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/g/mediawiki/extensions/cldr/+/HEAD/CldrNames/CldrNamesSv.php
The upstream data mentions afghanska as the standard name and pashto as a variant.
So either we need to override this in LocalNamesSv.php (if that works) or this needs to be corrected upstream. @Raymond What do you say?

Yes, this works.

https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pashto looks liks a good source for the patch.

or this needs to be corrected upstream.

At least a ticket should be filed: http://cldr.unicode.org/index/bug-reports#TOC-Filing-a-Ticket

@jhsoby / @Lea_Lacroix_WMDE Can you confirm that Pashto is the official Swedish name for the language and not just the preference for Swedish Wikidata users?

Mbch331 added a project: Language codes.

I'll make a patch to add the correct language to LocalNamesSv.php

Change 684490 had a related patch set uploaded (by Mbch331; author: Mbch331):

[mediawiki/extensions/cldr@master] Override CLDR name for language code ps in Swedish

I don't quite get @Raymond 's comment. Shouldn't code review assume that the linguistic part is already checked? @Lydia_Pintscher

There isn't necessarily a relation, no. Sometime like in this case the patch is so trivial that it's easier to make the patch first and then discuss more.

Anyway I think it'd be good to have a final confirmation by @jhsoby here as requested by @Mbch331. I at least don't have enough knowledge about the details to say what's right or wrong here and rely on expert advise.

Good point: usually Mbch331 is hard to convince to do them ahead ;)

I keep that in mind for T284276

I think langco had more than two weeks to comment, so I suppose this can move ahead

As a vetter of CLDR in fa, these weeks are around the time that you can request a change in CLDR 40 done by vetters so I think sv vetters of Wikimedia should push for this change upstream (and they should hurry). Looking at the list. @Amire80 is vetter in all languages and @jhsoby is a vetter in nb, nn, and sv.

In the meantime, let's merge the patch and revert it once CLDR 40 is fixed and released and deployed to our production (maybe bullseye?)

Maybe it's worth going through the information from CLDR and compare it to Wikidata/Wikipedia.

Looks like the sv-Wikipedia article was always at "Pashto".

Users who think it should be changed at CLDR as well, can always request it there.
