Creating Newsletter for mobile
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

I have started a draft here https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Mobile/Newsletter. Open questions and missing stuff are:

  1. Should it sync with Technews, or every sprint, or else..
  2. Would it make sense to have a major one and other Newsletter bits for frequent updates?
  3. This needs more visual aid (icons for mobile web/mobile app)
  4. If we agreed on the basic structure, we can keep the format, while add to it collaboratively?
  5. What else is possibly missing? :-)

Thanks!

Should it sync with Technews

Ideally, every piece of tech news should sync with Tech News.

@ Qgil, so you are suggesting this grows as a mobile section of Tech News?

You could start making sure that Mobile tech news are featured in Tech News, and then analyze whether you need something bigger separate.

I think this could a great opportunity to think about the larger picture and reorganize community newsletters and communications from the perspective of the CEP team.

We've been discussing for some time a more structured and consistent approach with regard to product- and engineering-related community announcements and discussions, and notably better coordination between Tech News, the VisualEditor newsletter, the Wikidata newsletter, etc.

Starting a Mobile newsletter could be the nudge we needed to think about newsletters in a holistic manner. @Rdicerb, is this something the CEP team would have interest in driving?

Ideally, every piece of tech news should sync with Tech News.

That still leaves a lot of room for non-tech news. For example, almost every issue of the VisualEditor newsletter includes a screenshot and a brief item that explains how to do something, which is neither "tech" nor necessarily "news".

I supporting including tech information in Tech/News. I'm not sure that everything on the list is really "tech news". Also, I beleive that there are a lot of people who don't read Tech/News, because they believe it's mostly about things they aren't interested in. A specialized newsletter solves that problem.

@Moushira, are you expecting this to be read on smartphones? If so, then frequent, short notices might be better than a large one.
