Goals
- Learn about how users reuse images on Wikipedia, and discover which information they need to do so.
- Check if the embed function from Media Viewer can be discovered and used (and whether the Wikitext we provide on Media Viewer is useful as it is).
- Discover which image information is often used (this is a secondary goal that can help with the discussion on which info may be needed below the fold and which is acceptable one more click away).
What we know
More people access the embed code than the wikitext one.
Possible explanations:
- Editors don't expect to find the wikitext embed code under the share panel either (a) because they are used to getting it through the File Page, or (b) because it is hard to discover when looking for "add an image using wikitext" (as oppose to HTML embed).
- Editors use different ways of adding images so the embed code provided is either (a) not needed or (b) not suited for the task.
Possible Questions
- Imagine you are working on article X and need to add an image. Can you show us how you normally add an image to an article? (We can present two scenarios one for looking for an existing picture, another for uploading a new one.)
- Which information you had to collect in order to add the image.
- Which other ways you know to add an image to an article? Do you often use them? why?
- Which information you had to collect in order to add the image on each case.
- When do you add images to articles? Do you upload and add that image next. Do you edit and article and then look for existing image? both?
- On Media viewer: can you pick image X and add it to article Y? (we may want to ask a couple of times to experience the optimisation for repetition, and use the alpha site to have latest design improvements)
- If you have to pick one piece of information from the File Page that is most useful to you which one would you pick. What do you use such info for on a regular basis?
