Design refreshed toolbar v2
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Contributor stories

v2

The objectives of v2 of the refreshed toolbar are to:

  • Help contributors feel confident in the changes they have made
  • Help contributors find the editing tool(s) they need to make a change
  • Make the edit flow feel more "knowable" and "fluid"

To help meet the objectives listed above we will make the following changes:

  • Evaluate the mobile dialog transitions: T224277 / T226951
  • Make it more clear to contributors when they are in "edit mode"
  • Show the visual diff – in its own step – by default

I made a draft of the design doc for this round of features. You can view it in google slides while in progress.

Here are the next steps that we identified (some which might need to be turned into sub-tasks of this ticket):

  • Team to give Jess directional feedback on this deck
  • Jess to draft Mockups
  • Jess to present mockups
  • Team to give Jess nit picky feedback on Invision
  • Jess to integrate feedback into final mockups and put into Zeplin

Here are the next steps that we identified (some which might need to be turned into sub-tasks of this ticket):

The deck looks good, @iamjessklein. I have no fundamental questions/concerns/comments.

I mainly:

  • Added relevant tickets throughout the deck
  • Contributed to the existing language in slides 14 ("Issue 2: Review changes"), and 15 ("Issue 3: Mobile dialog transitions")
  • Added a design consideration to side, 19 ("Design constraints")

I haven't thought these through 100% but since @Esanders pre-empted the conversation over in T208738, here are a few mockups that I've been tinkering with. These show a few specific attempts at highlighting edit vs read mode:

  • background color change
  • toolbar color change
  • selection highlighting
