Finalize Replying deployment strategy
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

This tasks involves the work with creating a deployment strategy that will help us accomplish the goals listed in the "Goals" section below.

Goals

  • Validate product direction
  • Identify edge cases
  • Do not make a bad first impression on unsuspecting contributors
  • Do not overwhelm the team with feedback
  • Ensure volunteers have ample time to share input about interventions that are being proposed

Deployment plan

The current draft can be found in the slides titled "Deployment: target wikis" and "Deployment: test wikis.": Talk Pages/Replying/Deployment strategy

Done

  • We have a plan that outlines how (What wikis? Opt in/out? etc.) the different versions (T235923 and T235593) of the replying workflow will be deployed

Event Timeline

Snapshot of what we have discussed so far:

StepWiki(s)DetailsNotes

Step 1partner wikisOpt-out as a Beta Feature
Step 2partner wikisOpt-out as a Preference
Step 3deploy to additional TBD wikisTBD

During today's staff meeting, @MMiller_WMF raised the following idea we ought to explore:

  • How might the Version 1.0 of the new replying prototype be deployed so more experienced contributors could experiment with it on their home wikis without having to worry their experimentation will affect other contributors?

Immediate-term: we are conducting pre-deployment testing on localized instances of beta.wmflabs.org. See: T242450.

Medium-term: per T243621#5849561, volunteers and our team will have the ability to try DiscussionTools on specific talk pages before DiscussionTools they are enabled for the entire wiki.
