Description

Over the past month, I have come across several times the opinion that it is very inconvenient for new users to start a new discussion on a non-created discussion page. And if I remember correctly, then I have had my own experiences with this problem 10 years ago.

Now it looks like this:

And this is very different from the usual behavior of discussion pages all over the Internet.

It seems to me that making something like a Newcomer homepage will be more inspiring to start the discussion on Talk page.

Event Timeline

I do like the new user profile page too. It is piloted at a couple of wikis (Czech and Korean). See https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Growth/Personalized_first_day/Newcomer_homepage and T213990

Thanks for the links, forgot to add them :)

@Iniquity: I was glad to see you had filed this task!

A resulting question for you: Are you able to share specific frustrations/difficulties you have heard people who are new to Wikipedia express about the experiences they have had landing on a non-created discussion page?

Also: if there are any links you can share to conversations where this topic has been brought up, we would value seeing those as well.

I'm afraid I won't be able to provide links, this is my (and not only mine) observation. New contributors very rarely create talk pages, and if they do, they usually do not use section markings: https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Adobe_Photoshop, https://ru.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Volkswagen_Polo&oldid=73900789, https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:.org etc.

We now have such a placeholder in DiscussionTools. It will be available on the wikis this week as a part of the beta feature.

Iniquity claimed this task.

Yes, I think this task can be closed, thanks! Convenient Discussions are compatible with the Discussion tool's new topic (T270323) feature and no separate placeholder is needed for it :)
