[SPIKE] How many distinct people are editing mobile talk pages each month?
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

In T233261, we identified the average number of people using talk pages each month, grouped by experience level and project. See: Wikipedia Monthly Talk Page Contributors.

This task is about building upon the work we did above, to identify the average number of people using talk pages each month, grouped by experience level, project, and platform (mobile web, iOS, Android, and desktop).

Knowing how many people are using talk pages on the mobile web will help us to identify the wikis we will seek to partner with in introducing DiscussionTool on mobile and more broadly, improving the experiences people have when trying to communicate with others using talk pages on the mobile web.

Requirements

  • The Wikipedia Monthly Talk Page Contributors sheet is updated with data from 1 October 2020 through 31 October, 2021
  • The Wikipedia Monthly Talk Page Contributors is updated such that we can see the average number of people who publish at least 1 non-reverted talk page edit each month and filter these numbers by Wikipedia, experience level (under 1-4/5-99/100-499/500+ cumulative edits, across namespaces), platform (mobile web, desktop, Android, and iOS).

@ppelberg
I've updated the Wikipedia Monthly Talk Page Contributors sheet with data from 1 October 2020 through 31 October, 2021 and added the platform grouping and filter.

Worksheets Description

  • The first worksheet "monthly_talk_page_contributors_overall" provides the overall data on talk page contributors for each project without any per platform or user experience breakdowns.
  • The second worksheet: "monthly_talk_page_contributors_byexp_and_platform" provides data on talk page contributors grouped by project, user edit experience, and platform.

New Platform Field:
The possible platform options are currently iOS edit, Android edit, Mobile Web edit or Other based on available revision tags. Other includes both desktop edits as well as edits made through other platforms such as using the API (e.g. AWB, Huggle, etc). We do not currently have a specific revision tag to specifically identify desktop edits but it is likely these make up the majority of the edits in the Other platform category.

This looks great, Megan
