[SPIKE] Identify the projects we will partner with to improve mobile talk pages
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

This task is about identifying the Wikipedias we will work most closely with in designing and developing mobile DiscussionTools.

Objectives

This section contains the objective of/reason for working with a subset of wikis as partners in the New Discussion Tool design and development processes.

Partner with a select number of wikis to help ensure mobile web talk pages enable:

  1. Junior Contributors to immediately recognize talk pages as places to communicate with other volunteers.
  1. Junior and Senior Contributors to be able to intuitively and with greater ease:
    • a) Respond to something someone else has said
    • b) Start a discussion about something new
    • c) Know when someone is saying something relevant to them

Activities

Below is a non-exhaustive list of things we will collaborate with volunteers at our to-be-defined partner wikis on.

  • Share feedback about issues they encounter with the mobile talk page experiences (read: MobileFrontend overlay + "Read as wiki page" view)
  • Use mobile DiscussionTools once they are deployed to identify and share feedback about their experiences using them
  • Identify areas for improvement or enhancements a future phase of the Talk Pages Project will consider

Partner Project Selection Criteria

The criteria in this section are borrowed from the Talk pages project/Partner wiki selection sheet.

  • Wikis with some number of Senior Contributors who use mobile talk pages each month, so that we have a "built-in" audience we can approach about trialing new mobile DiscussionTool features. See T295180.
  • Wikis that receive a consistent flow of newcomers each month, so that we can increase the likelihood the experiences we're designing meet Junior Contributors' needs
  • Wikis whose contributor bases are representative of the world at-large, specifically people who are underrepresented in the Movement. [i]
    • The above amounts to seeking a group of partner wikis that possess the following qualities:
      • Write in an RTL language
      • Write in a non-Latin script
      • Contributor bases include significant populations of people from/living in East Asia and Africa

/Read: we are seeking wikis that that use RTL and LTR languages, wikis whose editors bases includes significant populations of people living in East Asia and Africa, non-Latin scripts.

Read: representation amongst RTL/LTR langauges, wikis whose editors bases includes significant populations of people living in East Asia and Africa, non-Latin scripts.

Event Timeline

Update
I've updated the task description with what @Whatamidoing-WMF and I converged on in the conversation we had yesterday, 4-November

Next step

(@Whatamidoing-WMF: so you're aware, I've populated the task description's ===Partner Project Selection Criteria with the attributes we started talking about in offline conversations.)

Update
@Whatamidoing-WMF and I have converged on a set of wikis we plan to approach to partner with the Editing Team on the mobile talk page and Usability Improvement work we are are doing. [i]

Next steps
Before finalizing the set of partner wikis:

  • @Whatamidoing-WMF is going to begin reaching out to wikis to gauge their interest in partnering with the Editing Team in this work
  • @MNeisler is going to review the mobile talk page usage volume we will need to see amongst the wikis we partner with.

As there has been a long delay between the initial target date and the now-planned deployment date (except for htwiki), I have reminded all of these communities about this project.
