Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

🌱 This task is a seed of an idea on the forest floor that is Phabricator. As such, please consider it as a gathering place for a yet-to-be prioritized project.

Open questions

  • Whatever future solutions are found, might it make sense to similarly and explicitly store regular snapshots of data viz images to preserve a comparable historical record? via @Sj in T334940#9146175.
  • What might we be able to learn/reuse from the visualization libraries Our World in Data uses? via @Sj on mw:Extension talk:Graph/Plans

@ppelberg: Is there a problem description available why a successor is needed? We still have EasyTimeline so I am worried about even more technical debt.

There's an open proposal for a fully working OWD at T303853

Since people implementing the fully working OWD embed were asked to pause it, could someone please add scoping when and how to support that to the Charts lineup?

The successor to the Graph extension will be Charts, and the scope is outlined in the project page. I'd encourage discussion on the talk page rather than on this task.

I know we are still waiting on an answer about how to move forward with the OWID gadget (and I hope a decision will be shared soon), but I don't see the solution being to use Charts. Although the general concern of visualizing data for readers is the same, the OWID embeds are expertly curated experiences as compared to the editor-controlled visualizations that will be possible with charts. That said, people may of course still create charts using data from OWID that is available in Commons.
