When the width is insufficient, the Read/Edit tabs tend to overlap with the Page/Talk tabs. It would be better to hide the "Read" fake tab, before Edit is collapsed into "More".

Maybe this should be more general and to hide the tab of the current action? So on edit we'd show Read and not Edit.
That might work. I only care about the "edit" button not being hidden, everything else is not so important. (If navigating away from action=edit requires usage of the "back" button or equivalent, that's hardly a tragedy either.)
I am testing the hiding of the active tab myself: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User%3ATheDJ%2Fvector.css&type=revision&diff=735839405&oldid=703323026
It's an interesting idea.
Where Vector is enabled as responsive
e.g.

https://test.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page?useskinversion=2&useskin=vector
the tabs appear like so without an overlap:
While clearly this UI can be improved the original bug report no longer seems to be a problem.
