Follow up on Community Wishlist 2017 proposals that are related to Structured Commons
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/2017_Community_Wishlist_Survey/Multimedia_and_Commons collects proposals around multimedia and Wikimedia Commons. It is likely that some of these proposals will be related to Structured Commons. Some wishes will even be totally covered by the project.

In this task we assess and triage the community wishes and leave clear comments on-wiki where those proposals will be fully covered by Structured Commons development.

SandraF_WMF updated the task description. (Show Details)

Went over the multimedia proposals with Ramsey and Danny H on Thursday. I responded to 3 proposals which overlapped with SDC, the rest didn't need comment. There are two new proposals that seem related:

  1. Allow exploration of categories at upload time
  2. Upload-Wizard should remember the uploaders name

@SandraF_WMF , do you want to respond to these two, or shall I?

New one that is related to SDC:
Automatic display of attribution and license information

New one that could be related to SDC:
Write license data into meta data of image files
@Ramsey-WMF is this related?

@SandraF_WMF , do you want to respond to the three definitely-related ones? I will tomorrow morning (PST) if not.

Automatic display of attribution and license information is tangentially related. There's nothing stopping it from being done now except the Wikipedia community doesn't seem to want it. It could, as Wittylama suggests, possibly encourage editors to start cleaning up the licenses, but if that's going to happen we may prefer it takes place later, once Structured Licenses are done (when we'll need eyes on the process of migrating licenses anyway).

As far as these two:

Allow exploration of categories at upload time
Upload-Wizard should remember the uploaders name

I don't think they're directly related to SDoC and at least one of them (remember the uploaders name) already has a phab ticket (T154154) and a patch that still needs to be reviewed.

@Quiddity alerted me to this proposal by @Ainali https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/2017_Community_Wishlist_Survey/Multimedia_and_Commons/Track_changes_of_files_and_metadata

I assume it is inspired by this recent Wikidata statistics tool by Magnus: SPARQL-rc.

I clearly see the use case for such a statistics tool on Commons - it is very valuable feedback for uploaders. However, I think it would be wisest to only develop this after structured data on Commons will be rolled out, because Commons will function so much differently because of that (including more refined querying, and categories will probably become less pivotal in organizing information there). Thoughts?

Sure, it will be a lot easier with structured data on Commons, so don't put to much effort to this now. But as fas as I understood it, structured data on Commons is at least 3 years away, so doing a simple tool in ~40 hours would probably be a wise investment to support GLAMs until the promised future wonderland is here.

We have followed up on relevant requests, and commented upon them. Time to vote!
