Editor wants to quickly move back to whole page editing
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

This edge case was identified in T209984
If a user wants to edit a section and then quickly move back to editing the whole page, it takes a handful of (unnecessary) steps. This could be mitigated with a some ux improvements.

My instinct
This [1] is a good thing. I think we should be promoting more frequent publishing behavior to protect against contributors losing focus [2] and subsequently, not following through on completing their in-progress edits.

I say this considering that in following this path in the near-term we could be discouraging larger edits and defying the expectations desktop VE contributors hold.

I am okay with this tradeoff considering our current focus is on helping contributors make quick edits on the go, not promoting more involved edits.

Uncertainty
With the above said, @iamjessklein / @Esanders / @dchan / @Neil_P._Quinn_WMF y'all have been thinking about this since January and actually, as far back as August, 2018, what holes do you see in my thinking? What are you valuing that I'm not?

  1. This: Switching from section editing to editing the whole page takes – what seems like – unnecessary steps
  2. Losing focus: be it via the product or the environment in which they're editing

My only immediate thought to add is a reactive corrector may need to make the same small correction across a few places. E.g. updating a statistic mentioned in an infobox and in free text. For consistency, you wouldn't want to commit that change in two stages.

Also given this is a current limitation of every other editor that implements section editing, I don't think we need to make this new functionality a priority.

...you wouldn't want to commit that change in two stages.

@dchan I think we should be mindful of the potential for inconsistent edits and the potential for a loss in edits as a result of resisting this enhancement right now. Tho, I think it's worth taking these on in an effort to learn whether constraining the edit experience in this way could increase the likelihood contributors will save their edits.

And @Esanders, I hadn't realized this:

Also given this is a current limitation of every other editor that implements section editing, I don't think we need to make this new functionality a priority.

@JTannerWMF what do you think is the best action to take on a ticket like this? Move it to the freezer and tag it with Section-Editing?

A ticket "like this"...

  1. An enhancement we will not be working on right now
  2. An enhancement we do not have plans to work on in the immediate future
  3. An enhancement related to a feature we're actively thinking about
JTannerWMF moved this task from Needs Discussion/Analysis to Revisit on the VisualEditor board.
