Design CentralNotice banner for Usability Improvements design feedback
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

In T300821, we will be running a CentralNotice "campaign" that invites Senior Contributors to experiment with, and share feedback about, the Topic Container prototypes we are building in T301139.

This task involves the work with designing the banner that will run in CentralNotice and invite people to try the Topic Container prototypes.

Requirements

Meta

  • Colors used in banner ought to be a part of the Wikimedia color palette
  • People ought to be able to dismiss the banner so that they do not need to see it again
NOTE: official banner constraints can be found in Creating a banner.

Banner

  • Call to action that invites people to try the Topic Container prototype(s)
  • Text that helps people understand and decide whether they are interested in the invitation (read: call to action) we are putting in front of them
  • Imagery of some sort that catches peoples' attention and compels them to engage with the text/call to action contained within the banner

Adding "dismissibility" requirement per the guidance @NRodriguez shared offline.

I made two banner options for you to review. All feedback welcome.

@iamjessklein: building on what you shared in T301594#7738460:

  • 1. Which of the versions below do you think will best most effective at engaging people and causing them to understand what it is they are being invited to do?
  • 2. For the option you prefer, what – if any – edits would you suggest making to it to make it more effective at meeting the objectives stated above?

Peter, I like this simpler language. It would be possible to shorten the sentences (e.g., "Help improve talk pages. Share feedback...") but I don't think it is necessary to do so.

For the Call to Action, I think that "View prototype" may be needlessly complicated. Maybe "See the new design" or "Try it now"?

Based on a convenience sample of whichever of my teammates replied first, the second (broader) banner was preferred 3:1 over the first (specific) option.

This is helpful – thank you, @Whatamidoing-WMF. +1 to the idea of making the call-to-action more explicit.

With the feedback your teammates shared in mind (T301594#7775614), I'd like for us to move forward with language that is closer to the "specific" version shown in T301594#7765400. As you noted offline, we can always experiment with the broader version in T302121 and/or T302122.

Reason being: I think being specific about the changes being proposed in this design will enable Senior Contributors to more quickly decide whether this is a consultation they want to participate in or not because they will have a clear sense of the scope of the changes we are inviting them to review.

With the above in mind, I've added – what I'm proposing to be – the final version of the CentralNotice banner design to the description's === Banner Design section.

With T301594#7776320 posted, we've finalized the design of the CentralNotice banner. This means, this task can be resolved and work on T303562 can now begin.
