So I spent some time trying to find the issue here and I think its with the support library. The issue also occurs in this project https://medium.com/@hitherejoe/exploring-the-android-design-support-library-bottom-navigation-drawer-548de699e8e0#.6qjobx3m9 if you add a 4th item to the menu. They havn't implemented their own guidelines right.

BottomNavigationView doesn't seem to be appropriate for ArticleTabLayout in its current form as the buttons are actions not navigations. With more than 3 tabs the view is animated and it makes no sense to have an action continuously selected (and so larger than the others).

Special:Watchlist is the only special using the same line builder as Special:RecentChanges that I could find although Special:Contributions uses its own so its possible others could do the same.

How do you suggest linking the messages? I assume you mean like how msg-mw does it but with some workaround for int. And is there an easy way to search for occurrences in other extensions?
