Personalized first day: catalog existing new user overlays
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

This is a task for engineers.

When we deploy this feature, we don't want it to clash with any existing overlays that appear after users create their accounts. We know that there are Guided Tour overlays in many wikis. The task here is to figure out which ones can be triggered in Czech and Korean, and under what circumstances. Depending on the answer, we may decide to turn them off, or figure out how our new overlay does not disrupt them.

Event Timeline

This is ready for engineers to work on. Please let me know if more clarity is needed.

List of on-wiki tours

AFAICT, none of these are invoked after account creation.

Czech

  • Guidedtour-tour-BeBoldStudent.js
  • Guidedtour-tour-CitationsStudent.js
  • Guidedtour-tour-wikiedbebold.js

Korean

  • Guidedtour-tour-twa1.js
  • Guidedtour-tour-twa2.js

GettingStarted extensions

GettingStarted is enabled on Korean wiki, and it is configured to load a copyedit tour after account creation (you can see what this looks like on enwiki by going to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page?gettingStartedReturn=true). However, no copyedit task is defined in the configuration for Korean wiki, so the console shows Failed to request single page for task type "copyedit" and no overlay is displayed. We might want to consider uninstalling GettingStarted on Korean wiki.

GettingStarted is not present on Czech wiki.

@Catrope and @SBisson may want to double check, but I believe there should not be any issues with tours interfering with the survey display after account creation.

Nobody has informed Korean Wikipedia that this extension was available. Provided we knew about the extension, I would've bring it to the community attention to use them.

You mean to enable it?

It has been enabled for a while according to kostajh, but Korean Wikipedia has been never notified of GettingStarted being enabled.

Should your community enable it, considering that newcomers are going to test Personalized first day soon?

I don't think we are doing anything with that anytime soon (with the upcoming test), but I was pointing out that WMF has installed the extension without any community consensus, made no attempt to let the community know about the extension (so they can be used) - except the small snippet of Tech News in sometime during 2014 "GettingStarted now available on 2* more Wikipedias", then now discussing uninstall. Well, what was done is done, though.

@kostajh -- if I'm reading this correctly, you're saying that no tours or popups of any kind show up after new account creation in either wiki? @revi @Urbanecm, does that sound right?

Yes, you're right.

As far as I can tell, that's correct.

But a guided tour is linked from https://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedie:Pr%C5%AFvodce/P%C3%ADskovi%C5%A1t%C4%9B (one of steps of the tutorial). It is not automatic, through, a newbie must manually get to this tutorial and to click a button to start the tour. Just FYI.

I am going to keep this task in my column until we decide whether we want to use Variation A or Variation C as the default survey in more wikis. If Variation C, then we will need to consider the issues brought up in this task. We should be making a decision on that within weeks.

We have decided that Variation A is the better survey interface (T217625), and so we are no longer concerned about clashing overlays. I am resolving this.
