Enable edit revert notif by default on Wikipedia FR
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Hi,
We have a consensus on fr wikipedia to enable edit revert notification by default for new account. (9 support, 0 opposition in our Village pump).

Would it be possible to activate it from : https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sp%C3%A9cial:DisplayNotificationsConfiguration#mw-echo-displaynotificationsconfiguration-enabled-default ?
Thanks,

Do you wish to enable it for web only, or for both web and email? Thanks!

For web only, like the situation of account already created .

I don't understand you. If it's already the case, what exactly do we want to change? Or am I missing something?

In https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sp%C3%A9cial:DisplayNotificationsConfiguration#mw-echo-displaynotificationsconfiguration-enabled-default there is two option's by default :

  • Activé par défaut :
    • "Utilisateurs existants" -> notif revert for web is already enable
    • "Nouveaux utilisateurs" -> notif revort for web is disable

I propose to enable notif revert by default for all users so as well new users.
Tank you (and sorry for my bad English^^).

Okay, that makes sense. Will do it, probably during the next week. Thanks for the explanation!

Urbanecm, do you plan to do this soon ? Very thanks,

@Urbanecm, any update?

Thank you for your patience. I'm sorry, this turned out to be way more difficult than I originally anticipated :-(. It looks like the Echo extension itself is enforcing the echo-subscriptions-web-reverted preference to be set to false for new users. That explains why no way of changing the default seemed to work. Unfortunately, there's currently no config option that would let me to change the defaults for new users too. I filled T303566: Make it possible to customize EchoHooks::getNewUserPreferenceOverrides per wiki or remove it entirely to make Echo extension to support it.

Urbanecm subscribed.

This is blocked by a code change (and a decision on how to make this change possible). Unclaiming to reflect reality.

@Urbanecm , thank you for the details. I thought it was just a simple change to make. This is unfortunate.

Yeah, me too. Didn't expect it to be enforced in the extension code itself.

Hi @Trizek @NemoLePoisson, I have good news! It took way longer than originally anticipated, but thanks to the conditional user options project I worked on recently with my WMF staff hat on, this change can now be fulfilled w/o issues, assuming French Wikipedia still wants to go ahead. Please let me know.

Using my WMF hat there, I think we should be careful about enabling this feature.

First impression: the revert notification is quite violent. That's my personal feeling when I get it: it is not nice at all.

I'm an experienced user, and I know what to do to know the reason and ask the reverted for details. But a newbie won't know that.

I think we should T357546: Improve Revert Notification first.
