action=edit does not show deletion log, where applicable

Description

When I click on a red link of a previously deleted page such as User:MusikAnimal/sandbox3 (action=edit), I want to see this:

Screen Shot 2017-09-17 at 1.06.20 AM.png (123×1 px, 48 KB)

with the message MediaWiki:Recreate-moveddeleted-warn.

With VisualEditor, I don't get this system message or the deletion log. If possible, the log would be shown above the edit area instead of the edit notice flyout where there's not as much room (at least if it's a long log). I can see this as potentially a UI sacrifice, since VE/NWE beautifully animates the heading of a page and it's content into an editor... but with the deletion log I envision it just animating down as it does now but at the same time revealing the log.

Coming from a big fan of VE/NWE, and an admin, I must say being able to see this crucial information is sorely missed.

Deskana moved this task from To Triage to TR1: Releases on the VisualEditor board.
Deskana subscribed.

So, the notice "Wikipedia does not have a user page with this exact title..." etc. is there, but the list of deletions is not there.

Do we want to cram these notices into that tiny box? That doesn't good, but not displaying them is probably even worse.

Like I said, ideally it'd be shown above the edit area. In my opinion edit notices and AbuseFilter warnings should be shown there too, since some are not designed to fit in a tiny flyout and convey important information (e.g. Template:Newarticletext-unconfirmed, MediaWiki:Abusefilter-unexplained-removal). I'm unsure what the reason was behind this design over showing it like it is normally shown, but in the case of the deletion log I don't think the flyout is going to work :/

Elitre asked me to comment here. This is just to confirm MusikAnimal's point above that the clickable link that admins see on pages with deleted edits—"View or restore [X number of] deleted edits?"—is not clickable with the new wikitext editor.

Yeah, it's a problem. These kinds of issues would need to be resolved before this feature is considered for being moved out of beta.

At least in my workflow, when I click on a red link, I almost always just want to see the log and not actually recreate the page. I realize this is a MediaWiki thing (adding action=edit to red links) and not VE/NWE, but I thought I'd comment.

So ideally, for me, and probably for other admins and power users, the deletion log and "View or restore..." link would be immediately shown on page load. The info flyout is only shown after VE/NWE finishes loading, which is only a few seconds, but would be enough to noticeably slow down my work. However right now I'm manually removing the "&action=edit" from the URL which obviously is even worse.

Thanks for all you do. There are only a few issues with NWE that's hampering my admin duties (this and T168533, namely), but overall I'm a huge fan and am looking forward to these issues being resolved so I can say goodbye to the old wikitext editor for good :)

Am I right in thinking that T199087 is a duplicate of this? Because I have a patch for that which gets us:

That gives us the log, so yes. There were was also talk about having the log above the edit area, rather than in the flyout, but I suppose that is a separate issue.

Yay!

but I suppose that is a separate issue.

Sort of? You made those comments earlier on this task.

I mostly agree with your description of the task flow issues with VE loading always with red links at T176070#36914307, but at least I don't have to manipulate the URL with it in the flyout (which might also reasonably be not enough in the user's face who might otherwise recreate the page anyway).

Yeah, but that's more of a design decision. Putting stuff above the edit area will conflict with the way VE works now. I'm sure that aspect needs deeper thought.

I'm with you on that. Being able to see quickly see the log makes my workflow much easier, even if it may look a little cluttered.
