Identify which wikiprojects are active on ko.wp and cs.wp
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Growth team plans to survey newcomers to ask them their interests. This will be through T206375: Personalized first day: write survey copy and (less) T206711: [EPIC] Growth: Focus on help desk (in-context link).

In the future, we may use such a survey to direct newcomers to wikiprojects, where a specialist in their interest could be found.

Therefore, we think that the right way to ask newcomers about their interests is to allow them to choose from a list of wikiprojects.
The goal of this task is to identify and make a list (in English) of wikiprojects. Because there are many many wikiprojects, we think the list should include:

  • All the "top level" wikiprojects (e.g. "WikiProject Science", but not "WikiProject Biology")
  • Any additional WikiProjects that are particularly active.
  • An indication of which WikiProjects are particularly active.

This task focuses first on Korean and Czech wikis.

List is now complete.

@MMiller_WMF, if that idea of Personalized First day becomes a permanent feature, how are we going to update the projects that are active or have became inactive?

Uninvited response: What about a page in MediaWiki namespace and let admin to deal with it?

That's the option I had in mind too but I wanted to see if another option was considered.

Another way to match newcomers and experienced users on a common topic is to use userboxes. However, as @revi told us yesterday, they are not used on every wiki (they are not used on ko.wp).

What if a topic is not covered by a wiki project? Wikipeojects can be selective and sometimes, the field of knowledge you want to contribute to is an intersection of a couple of projects (or more).

A (fictional) example: I want to edit about K-pop on fr.wp. How can I know that I have to select both projects "Electronic Music" and "South Korea"?

As @Urbanecm has surfaced it through a Czech to Slovenian translation wikiproject, people can also wish translate. How can we surface translations through the wikiproject but how can we surface it overall?

Trizek-WMF closed this task as Resolved.

There are still questions, but they have been surfaced during the identification process. They are more for the next steps than the project itself.
The work is done, so is the current task.

In T206372#4704996, I listed the topics we decided to use for this survey question, along with the reasoning for why they were chosen.
