Description

Background

"Chinese Wikipedia already has a gadget that increases the font size for a better Chinese reading experience. Japanese and classical Chinese Wikipedia also have such kinds of gadgets. It would be nice if we could integrate these gadgets into new Vector skin directly. This would benefit other CJK and multilingual wikis." --User:Diskdance

Acceptance criteria

  • QA new font size options on the following wikis:
  • Chinese Wikipedia
  • Japanese Wikipedia
  • Urdu Wikipedia
  • Note if any bugs appear which are not apparent on other wikis
  • Document each font size option on these wikis

Event Timeline

Currently, the gadget seems to be on by default on zhwiki and jawiki (15 px)

@Jdlrobson would it be possible for us to connect the max-width to this gadget so that when the gadget is on the max-width increases?

The gadget is pretty simple. Personally, I'd rather we made this part of the codebase so that non-Wikipedia projects can benefit. We can change the max-width and font-size based on language code.

Hello. is there any update about this task? There is currently a discussion on the Chinese Wikipedia regarding Chinese character font sizes and max-width Thanks.

Adding to sprint 5 as we should have the ability to evaluate this at that time.

Jdlrobson changed the task status from Open to Stalled.Nov 20 2023, 6:56 PM

Hi. For the User-notice (Tech News entry), is this ready to announce yet? (I'm uncertain whether it's Beta Cluster only for now, or going live to production wikis soon).

  • Wording: Whenever it does go live, what should the entry say?
  • Timing: If not this week, then please clarify when the changes will be live?
  • Task: If this is not the correct task for the associated announcement, then please move the User-notice tag to the appropriate task.

Thanks!

Good catch! We don't need a user notice for this :)

Note: At present, since the Chinese Wikipedia has a gadget of increasing font size, the gadget would override this font size options and it would not work. Also, Japanese Wikipedia has similar gadget.

Perhaps need to notify community this change, so that they can modify their existing gadgets? Thanks.
