Homepage: impact module text changes
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

This task contains a couple of changes to the text of the impact module. These changes are applicable to both mobile and desktop.

IN THE UNACTIVATED STATE

Users tests showed that the impact module was difficult to understand in the unactivated state:

  • what "impact" means
  • if articles they have created are also shown there (they find a difference between an article creation and an article edit)
  • what "edits to other kinds of pages" are

To clarify this, we will change the wording in the unactivated state of the module.

Mobile preview: the content of the preview should consist of the following.

  • Monitor views of articles you've edited (light gray, small)
  • You have not yet created or edited any articles. (black, large)
  • Views from recent edits (last 60 days): (light gray, small)
  • Includes a large blue "0".

See the "Module overview in mobile homepage (unactivated)" mockup here for the visual treatment -- but the current language is written in this task.

Full module (desktop and mobile)

  • Remove the two existing sentences that read, "You have not yet edited..." and "This area will show the impact..."
  • Add this sentence: "This area will show how many times people have viewed the articles you have created or edited."

WHEN THERE ARE NO PAGEVIEWS AVAILABLE ON ANY ARTICLES OR WHEN THEY ARE ZERO

When the impact module is activated, but contains only articles for which pageviews are still being calculated or only articles that have zero pageviews, it still contains the text of "People are viewing the articles you edited!"

In these cases, that text instead should read, "This area will show how many times people have viewed the articles you have created or edited."

See the "First edit to article" mockup here to see the visual treatment -- but the current language is written in this task.

@MMiller_WMF
I have added mockups in T223219
Copy is still TBC.

MMiller_WMF renamed this task from Homepage: impact module text for activated with no views to Homepage: impact module texts changes.Jun 6 2019, 2:03 AM
MMiller_WMF renamed this task from Homepage: impact module texts changes to Homepage: impact module text changes.
MMiller_WMF removed Cntlsn as the assignee of this task.
MMiller_WMF updated the task description. (Show Details)

I rewrote this task to include all minor text changes we want to make to the impact module in the near term, before addressing the issues of:

  • Showing/hiding elements depending on usage (T223219)
  • Call to action for unactivated state (T223221)
  • Animation around edits made (T223127)

This is now ready for development. @Cntlsn -- please take a look over to double check that I organized things correctly.

@MMiller_WMF
Thanks for taking the time to do this!
Things are organized correctly, and I have updated the mockups with the new copy on both InVision and Zeplin.

@Cntlsn - please review the following:

(2) Impact module on mobile still has 0 for uncalculated pageviews

WHEN THERE ARE NO PAGEVIEWS AVAILABLE ON ANY ARTICLES OR WHEN THEY ARE ZERO

Note:
The label "0 edits to other kinds of pages (see all)" is rather ambiguous - "see all" when there is 0 sounds as an error. It might be a good place to introduce 'Contributions' page - (see all your contributions) ? And do not have it for 0 count?

Thanks @Etonkovidova for your comments

Looks good to me

The preview should show the clock icon. I will add more details about this in T216220

Thanks for raising this, we never looked into that but it's a very good point. I have a question about it: is it possible to have 0 edits to other kinds of pages but still have other kinds of contributions?
Looping @MMiller_WMF

Looping @MMiller_WMF

Yes, of course it's possible - the case when a user makes only non-article related edits. How realistic this scenario is - it's another question. At any rate, it's more realistic than having zero views for edited articles and we've covered that case.

@Etonkovidova
I'll clarify my question: would it be possible to have edits showing up in Special:Contributions that are not counted as "edits to articles" or "edits to other kinds of pages"?

@Cntlsn -- all edits are either article edits or edits to other kinds of pages. I think it is okay for the unactivated module to say "0 edits to other kinds of pages (see all)". I think by showing them the zero, it conveys that they currently have none, but they are expected to go out and make some. And the "see all" conveys that the contributions page is there whether they have edits or not. I don't think we should change this now.

For the big "0" in the module preview, I created this separate task: T225560

@Cntlsn -- do you have any other issues on this task? Or should we move it to "Needs PM Review"?

@MMiller_WMF
Ok about not dealing with it now, but I think we should take care of it at some point, as the copy could be misleading.

Moving the task into "Needs PM Review".

This looks good to me. I'm leaving it in my column until it's in production.
