[CatWatch] Request for blocklist/allowlist feature for category addition watchlist
Open, MediumPublicFeature

Description

I'm glad that a watchlist page switch was added so soon.

Me and some other Wikimedia Commons users with high-traffic cats on their watchlist are hoping for a feature that enables separate opt-in/opt-out choices (whitelist/blacklist) for specific categories. Preferably one that does not require copy-pasting or typing every cat name by hand.

Commons deals with entirely different levels of category traffic than the text-based projects, and "power users" typically have massive watchlists with a lot of categories they follow in order to know if someone is making edits that need attention or editing the cat talk.

As things are now, users must choice either unwatching some of our highest-traffic, most central categories, or opt out of the Wikidata watchlist feature entirely.

Normally,

  • to permanently "opt-out"/filter-out: Hide categorization of pages in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-watchlist
  • to temporarily filter-out: Hide page categorization at "Watchlist options" in Special:Watchlist or Special:RecentChanges

Hence functionality requested in this task should normally already exist (though this functionality is currently temporarily not available, as mentioned in T109633#1558302 ).
Furthermore, the fix for task T9148 which was https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/211526/ got reverted by https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/232764/ for the time being.

Given these two, I am not sure there are good reasons for keeping this task open.

I also see the name was changed to Wikidata.

Where do you see this? The categorization/de-categorization watch is not part of WIkidata as far as I know.

They're asking to only see categorization/de-categorization for certain categories (or see it by default, but be able to blacklist certain categories), while keeping other categories watched (so e.g. if the actual category page or category talk page changes, they'll see that).

To me I was seeing this more as an "ignore category" component, which would work similarly to how some wikis implement hidden categories

These are both "all or nothing" options that apply to all watched categories at once. What we'd like to have is the option to make the decision of whether or not we want to get category content updates for each category separately. For instance:

  • I watch Category:Aircraft by registration to see if someone makes changes to the instructions or if there is anything new on the talk page. I'm not at all interested in the permanent influx of new subcategories flooding my watchlist.
  • On the other hand, I'd be very interested to be notified of new additions to some other categories for rare subjects (Category:LFU 205, for example)

Perhaps @Pitke didn't notice the Wikidata watchlist integration until category watching was undeployed.

Confirming that I didn't notice the Wikidata watchlist integration until category watching was undeployed.

So I don't think this is going to be something that will go in with the initial version #2 of this feature..
But the ticket will remain open.

The initial version will by default hide categorization changes in the watchlist and RC feeds, we can move on from there.

The initial version will by default hide categorization changes in the watch list

As a clarification, when categorization changes were previously enabled the ability to hide categorization changes by turning them off in the Watchlist options at the top of the Watchlist didn't address all of the problems for those with high volume categories on their watchlist on Commons. In my case the time to load my watchlist rose from ~2 seconds to over 60 seconds when categorization changes were enabled, and enabling the hide option in the watchlist did not restore the load time for the page. I am sure it was worse for others as I know that some active Commons volunteers have much larger watchlists than I.

@RP88, how expansive is your watchlist? Mine is currently 33K (much smaller than previously due to watchlist tech issues) and I think the load time was around 5-10 secs with cat changes on.

Only 5K or so. The time increase was probably because I was watching several categories that each had many thousands of category changes over the default watchlist period.
